What is the meaning of "uthawi"?
uthawi means 'help' in Tamil language.
Why was uthawi created?
uthawi was created to help those children residing in the Children’s homes, who have lost their parents (or the children who have lost their provider in the family) and relatives in the war or due to other reasons.
aren't there many big organizations all over the world, With the same purpose?
Not all the people who need help, receive the needed help from these big and famous organizations. There are many people around the world who are neglected and abandoned.
How does the Children Homes' get selected?
We directly went and saw the children's homes in very poor conditions, which are not receiving any or enough help from the Sri Lankan government or non-governmental organizations. There are other children's homes' which we didn't see, might be in even poorer conditions.
What kind of help is provided by "uthawi"?
only money is collected by uthawi for the childrens’ homes which are in contact with uthawi. The reality is that uthawi couldn’t collect enough fund, and so, the money collected is only used to cover one portion of the children’s meal plan.
Why goods needed for the children are not being accepted by "uthawi"?
The cost of sending the goods from abroad to Sri Lanka is higher than the specific goods. "uthawi" doesn't have the cost money. The Big organisations also not interested in helping to send them. For the people who manage the Chldren's Homes' in the unsafe Sri Lankan political environment, traveling long hours and making sure they get there, is quite impossible.
How is Donation for uthawi being Collected?
Whoever wanted to help can send their donation directly to the Bank Account of the organisation "Kriegswaisenhilfe Sri-Lanka e.V." people can also send via paypal in internet.
What is "Kriegswaisenhilfe Sri-Lanka e.V"?
In the interest of collecting donation for "uthawi" this is a registered organisation in Germany created by German friends. For the donation received, taxfree receipt is given by the German Finance department.
Why two such organisations, as "uthawi" and "Kriegswaisenhilfe Sri-Lanka e.V"?
"uthawi" is not an organisation. It is just a bridge between the Childrens homes and the donors. Since implying this form is not possible in money collection, following the German Laws "Kriegswaisenhilfe Sri-Lanka e.V" is created and registered.
Does the donation given to "uthawi" being used for its managemental costs?
Only the costs to have a Bank account and the bank service charges to send money to Sri Lanka is being taken from Donations. All other expenses (internet, telephone, postal publications, transportation, media and so on..) are spend from personal income by uthawi friends.
Does "uthawi" give out salary?
No. To meet our life's needs, all "uthawi" friends go to work.
Why "uthawi" does not have the Evident/proof Stamp which all well known organisations have?
To get this evident stamp in Germany one have to register in an independal organisation called Deutsches Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen/DZI. 1.500 euros are charged for this. The evident document given is only valid for a year. annually there is a charge for renewal. "uthawi" doesn't have money for this. If anybody is willing to take responsibilty for this money, "uthawi" has no obstacle to register for this document.
Where do you complain when you suspect fraud in "uthawi"?
You can complain to the independant organization called Deutsches Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen/DZI . Giving the registration number of Kriegswaisenhilfe Sri-Lanka e.V (VR-No. 1001 ) complain in the German Federal Ministry of Finance.
How transparent are the fund info of "uthawi"?
Donors of uthawi can view all the Donation information in uthawi.net at any time. The responsibility of monitoring the money support is given to the registered users who donated via uthawi website. Directly contacting the childrens' homes & confirming the given info is also openly available for all.
In Which other ways uthawi Donation Info is being monitored?
Annually, bank Reports about the Donation and proof letters from the Children's Homes' which received the donations (These are confirmed by the approved authorities of the specific place in Sri Lanka) are shown to the German Finance Ministry.
Can anyone contact uthawi to adopt children?
No.
Does uthawi take direct responsiblity in running any childrens’ homes?
No.
Is uthawi a representative of any political party or a religious institution?
No.
Where is the uthawi's office located?
There is no founder, secretary, offices or branches for uthawi, it is solely a group work done by people who are willing to offer their help, without knowing each others’ identity.
How can one keep in contact with "uthawi"?
Due to Time Inconveniency, lack of volunteers telephone and direct contacts are not convenient in reality. One can contact "uthawi" through internet (email, ephone) or post.
Who is behind "uthawi" website?
Some Sri Lankan Tamils who are in abroad, joined with socially concerned people, and created uthawi website, without the ethnic, religious, and language differences.
People who start as social workers, become public figures and through these public figures is the works get recognized. The group works and efforts, put behind these public figures become unrecognized and only one individual gets noticed. Thus, keeping these factors in mind, uthawi works anonymously putting the action before people.
Even though in uthawi’s contacts some names had been mentioned, in such areas as, translation, web page creation, money support, guidance and monitoring, there are many people whose names are not mentioned, but have also contributed to uthawi in different ways. These people are also the organizers behind uthawi.
Would these childrens' problems vanish, when we help for their food expenses?
