Batticaloa- Last week, I went for the Palukamam Vipulanandar Childrens Home for a documentry film shooting. I was able to note that the place where the home is located is a very quiet and peaceful place.
I was also able to see the children were all well brought and peaceful. I was very much happy to see the children maintaining their surrounding very beautiful and clean in their own manner. Each of them perfectly did their duties such as cleaning, gardening and kitchen chores. They also managed their time and their studies as well.
We are able to see that for these, the managers of the Home hold a great responsibility. Their disciplining and ways to take care of the children are very skillful. For the way they interact with the children and the way that they ask and fulfil the kids needs – we sincerely appreciate the management.
Yet, there are some concerns. That is, we were able to see sorrow in some of the children’s faces. I couldn’t understand what the exact reason behind this. The management should identify this and should try to understand what their problems are. Because we shoudn’t let discriminative mentality among children.
Eventhough the place has enough space and all, there is no enough light in the children’s studying area, in the night. I realised this when I choreograph in the night. I felt sad when the children were struggled while studying. There is no doubt that the lack of light in their study area will affect their eyes. It was hard to see them keeping their books closer to their eyes due to the lack of light. Eventhough they have access to water supplies they only use it for bathing and sanitary needs. They use the water from neighbourhood homes for drinking. I saw them taking baths standing around a water-well. At times, I felt that the water well is unsafe.
The place where toilet is located is fine. However, the place the children use for urinating is not a healthy one. In an open field, a square fenced space is used for urinating. Since they are urinating outside, it’s not healthy. Therefore, there should be a healthy place made for them.
Also, there is no light available to this place at night. The maangement should do something about this since the small children are also using it in the night time. It would be great if these needs are fulfilled.
One day I had a chance to eat lunch with the children. There is some concern over it. I think it would be nice if the poeople in charge would take a little more care about the food. (I am not able say what it is).
Above all, if the management give the children social and psychological help skills and advices, it would help them in their future. I was amazed to see that the management took care of the children with the limited amount of facilities they have. If they had more resources they would be give much more care and support possible to the children, I have no doubt about it. Therefore, people should help provide the resources needed.
